What is Lunar New Year and why is it celebrated?
Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, has more than a 2,500-year history and is one of the most important festivals in China. It marks the start of the lunisolar calendar, celebrated by millions of people across Asia and beyond. Each Spring Festival stands for one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. In China, people celebrate each spring festival through a wide range of activities such as lion dance, family reunions, feasts, firecrackers, and red envelopes with money for good luck and prosperity. Lunar New Year is a time to honor ancestors, pay respects to elders, exchange greetings, and wish for happiness and health in the coming year.
